When the United States Military went to War with Iraq in 1991 the soldiers were still eating the same MRE or Meals Ready to Eat as they did the year before. But if you happened to be a Jewish or Muslim soldier you would be unable to adhere to your religious guidelines without a suitable Kosher MRE. Regardless of what was available it wouldn't be long before some major changes took place.
The Jewish religion is increasing in numbers. In the military however it is normally something not talked about too often except in circles of close friends or with a chaplain or other religious or authority figure. Regardless of who you speak with, in many cases some would just rather not make a case of the fact that they are Jewish and request a kosher meal.
That would not be the end of this fight for the company CEO however. She brought the case to the Pentagon and for five long years she fought to get the program back in place. She felt very strongly that soldiers of those religious beliefs should have the opportunity to keep up with their religious duties.
It was in 1991 that a company that was producing shelf stable children's meals agreed to switch production over to producing the Kosher MRE for Jewish and Muslim troops serving in the first Iraqi war. All of those troops owe the CEO of that company a debt of gratitude because before that happened the United States military did not provide such a thing.
The standard issue MRE is no longer just something that is given to troops anymore. In the past they were just something the military used to feed soldiers deployed to combat roles or in the field. Today however they are used for humanitarian relief efforts, emergency responders who are unable to get meals when battling fires or other natural disasters or anyone else in need.
These are especially helpful for humanitarian efforts around the world and places where people are starving. When people who want to help cannot provide certain foods because they would go bad or would not last without refrigeration, the MRE is a perfect solution. With the Kosher MRE now available they could be even more help because many of these places are generally of the Muslim faith.
The meals that come in these packs are capable of lasting for a very long time because of their packaging and how they are made. The food within is very good most people say and comes complete with everything needed for a complete meal. There is a main course, side dishes and desert all included in a meal.
The food got much better over the years and that is evident by the fact that the military was open to change. Having the Kosher MRE is a huge step in the right direction of making the military truly accepting of everyone and their religions beliefs as well as their cultures.
