Survival during emergency situations like in the event of disaster and calamities is greatly affected by planning and preparation. Looking an area to store your emergency and survival foods is not difficult, you just have to find a place in your home that is not used and has enough space to be used as emergency food storage.

Things to check when looking for the perfect spot for your emergency food storage:

- Since moisture and extreme heat has the tendency to damage the quality of stored foods, it is important to look for a cool and dry place to store your emergency foods. Your emergency foods should be placed in an area not near the water heaters, furnace, refrigerators, freezers, and heat and cold-producing equipment to avoid damage and changes of the normal state of your stored foods.

-When trying to look for a place to store your emergency foods, try looking for places near the kitchen first. Placing your emergency foods near the kitchen gives you the opportunity to prepare your foods immediately since you will have immediate access on kitchen utensils.

-Rodents and insects may contaminate the foods you have stored if every they will have access to it. Hence it is significant to look for a spot that is free from rodents and insects.

-Be sure to find an area that is not easily reached by children.

-For people who cannot find a place in the house that has sufficient space for food storage, you need to be creative and think more of a place in the house that could possibly be utilized for your emergency food storage. One example would be the place under the stairs or even under the bed but just make sure that the area is clean and free from rodents and insects as well as moisture and heat.

After you have found an area to store your emergency or survival foods, the next thing to do to is to start stocking up your emergency foods. You don't have to do that by shopping large quantities of emergency foods, you can start small or each time you go to the grocery to buy normal food supply for you and your family, you can start to buy some emergency foods little by little. But be sure to check the dates of expiration when you buy emergency foods that you are planning to buy. This way, you will be sure that you can store them for longer periods of time before they expire. Also choose to buy those foods that are dry, nutritious, easy to cook and prepare, is sealed properly and can be stored easily. These kinds of food are most advisable to be stored and can be eaten easily in emergency situations like disaster and calamity. Important thing to remember when storing emergency foods is to include a sufficient supply of water in your emergency foods storage. Water is very important in any situation. You may store emergency foods little by little but it is important to keep in mind that you need to add more stocks until the amount of emergency food in your storage is sufficient for you and your family members to consume for at least a number of days.
