Choosing The Right Amount Of Wine For A Special Occasion

By David Dienger

There are many times in life that call for celebration. They may be milestones in one's personal life or in the life of someone the person knows, that deserve to be honored. Many such events include fermented drinks of some type, leaving the planner to wonder about choosing the right amount of wine for a special occasion.

Parties of all types can be enhanced by serving spirits. Whether a party at the office for someone who is retiring or a young couple getting married, the method of selection remains the same. It ensures that plenty of drinks are on hand for the event.

How much to buy?

Calculations of these types are much easier using ratios. Remember, each bottle yields approximately five 5oz servings. While this does not fill each glass to the brim, it is a solid, good sized serving. Thus, 12 bottles will fill an average of 60 glasses. For a party of 30 this gives an average of 2 glasses per individual. In a business setting this is a good number for each hour the party is expected to last. In social settings, it may be necessary to increase to 3 glasses per person per hour.

Whites and Reds

The long standing rule of thumb is 1 bottle of white for each two bottles of red. However, experience is showing a slight shift and a better number may be two bottles of white for each three bottles of red. However, knowing those in attendance can also influence your purchases.

Can I Find Choices in my Budget?

If concerned about cost, look at less expensive products from Portugal, Spain, Southern France or Chile. Remember it is more expensive to make better wines so the manufacturer must pass these costs along. Parties at the office do well with easy going wines. In big social events, pair the selection with the meal.

What About Liquor Permits?

In Canada, a liquor permit is required if alcohol is served outside a personal residence or licensed establishment. They can be purchased there for a nominal fee. A more expensive permit is required if the drinks are being sold. Be sure to check local regulations where planning the party to ensure the fun is not ruined by the lack of a license.

Many lovers of vino will keep a bottle around the house to open and share when friends come to call. Occasionally, one may need to purchase a case for use in everyday events. This will ensure that there is plenty on-hand to host any impromptu event that happens to come up. It is also a good way to always have a bottle available to present to your host at a dinner party. If you want to build a cellar, follow the rule of buying two bottles for every one you open.

Choosing the Right Amount of Wine for a Special Occasion? It is a simple manner of ratios. By knowing how much each bottle contains, the number of drinks per hour and the length of the event, anyone can ensure they are adequately prepared. Remember to plan a little extra just in case as you do not want to run short.

Cheers
