By Vicki Diaz

Meal planning for a vacation makes it possible to travel without worrying about whether or not kosher meals will be available. Appropriate meal choices can be found at any destination. Meal planning before arrival can eliminate the stress of having to search for something kosher every time I meal or snack is needed.

Vacations to exotic destinations where a resort stay is in the picture, their are most likely already plenty of options on the resort menu. If for some reason there isn't though, one can also search for local restaurants that serve kosher dishes. Now days, there are a large number of dining establishments that have these types of dishes readily available to their patrons.

One could also request their room come with a kitchenette so that they could purchase their own foods from local grocery stores and stock the fridge in their room. A refrigerator and microwave will allow for meals to be prepared without having to leave the hotel room. This is a cost saving method and can be much healthier than eating out the entire time.

There is also the option to pack and bring along a hot plate and a slow cooker to use in the hotel room. The meal choices with these two basic tools are nearly endless and can be tailored to meet specific dietary restrictions. Place food in a slow cooker before going out for the day and it is warm and ready to eat when they day is coming to an end.

If research shows there aren't any grocery stores near a person's hotel, it is possible to bring food items along in luggage as well. Many families elect to dedicated a few pieces of luggage and a cooler for food transportation. This not only saves a lot of money if there are several people to feed, but is also a great solution if there is no where to go buy groceries when you arrive.

While this method really only allows for the most basic eating, many people want something more during a vacation. An alternative option is to either cook or order out the meals needed and then freeze them. Once frozen they can be packed into a cooler and brought along. Once at the hotel, they will just need to be put in the refrigerator and a microwave will be needed for reheating. If traveling with a cooler seems like too much, having the items shipped in dry ice is also another option that some people have used.

Fresh foods can be added to these meals by searching locally for markets or by requesting them from the hotels kitchen. Fresh food items are always easy to locate as every hotel will usually have these available to their guests for any meals. The combination of self prepared meals and fresh fruits and vegetables allows for well rounded and nutritional meals that remain within the dietary standards.

Finding kosher meals during a vacation is not nearly as hard to pull off as it seems at first. With just a little bit of planning, any special diet can be achieved. While a few of these methods may seem a bit extreme, they are perfect solutions when there is no other option. What is good to know, however, is that many locations have a variety of kosher friendly business nearby so most vacationers don't have much trouble at all finding foods they can eat while on their trip.
