At established camps and bases where hot meals are served, the dining hall will list the food prepared and some other basic information. The number of religious meals prepared is based on the number of soldiers stationed there, with religious requirements. In the field, the mess tent or field dining hall will serve one hot meal and two cold meals, all prepared from MREs. The ration breakdown sent to the field will depend on the number of people that have special needs.

The MREs are prepared without any preservatives which means there is no risk of forbidden ingredients, such gelatin or alcohol in flavorings contaminate the food. Most are prepared with 1200 calories so that soldiers will be certain to receive enough fuel and nutrition to keep them healthy, strong, and mentally alert.
