Cocktail Sundays at The Bison Bar

By Jeremy Brown

Say the word 'vodka' and it brings to mind icy Russians with thick, deeply-accented voices, wearing ushankas. So, it was a quite a learning curve to discover that one of the most preeminent vodkas in the world is produced in our own leafy, green Herefordshire, haunt of the Best of British Beef cattle. Yes! An English vodka made from authentic, home-grown pomme de notre terre.

Chase vodka is named after its creator, William Chase. Branching out from sales of the humble potato, his first brainchild was Tyrrells: the crisps we all reach for on our weekly shop. Having conquered this market, Chase decided to distil vodka. And, not just any vodkahis is an award-winner which has achieved international renown. Chase vodka is said to have hints of warm butter, creamy mash, cracked black pepper and smoky almonds. You cannot argue with that delectable medley of flavours.

Having travelled widely to research how to make a superior velvety vodka, this admirable entrepreneur has had elements of his copper still hand-crafted to ensure that the alcohol content is not completely stripped from the fermented potatoes. Add to that a formidably meticulous process of distillation and hand-bottling (in an exquisite bottle), the final result is liquid silk! I cannot pay enough tribute to this magnificent British tipple or its ingenious inventor so visit the website or buy a bottle to decide for yourself.

And, now you have the vodka bug, how about a cocktail? The Cocktail of the Month at the Chase Distillery blends Vermouth with smoked vodka and a swirl of lemon. Et voila, you have made the aptly christened Smoke on the Water Martini. A hot summer's day calls for a cooling Cucumber Passion: cubes of cucumber splashed with passion fruit syrup, lemonade and lime. For the more fiery amongst us, add tabasco sauce, salt and tinned lychees to mojito syrup and vodka to create a Chilli Lychee. Or try the amazing combination of vodka, pomegranate syrup, Red vermouth, basil and cherries to make a Crimson Twilight creation.

If you prefer your cocktails to be mixed and poured for you then you really should consider heading on down to Home House of Portman Square. On Sundays The Bison Bar is the place to be for cocktails with a wide selection of the tropical delights. Pop down for a classic Mai Tai or simply choose a tasty treat from the extensive menu and relax.
