A Marco Island Vacation On Florida's Gulf Coast

By Carmella Watts

A Marco Island vacation is one of the best options for a beach holiday on Florida's Gulf Coast. Visitors will find the sun shining brightly on sparkling waters and sugar-white sandy beaches. They can indulge in plenty of water sports and recreational opportunities. There's also the fact that it is located right next to the Everglades, and tourists can add to the holiday fun with activities like shopping or golf.

The best way to start planning for this holiday would be to understand the lay of the land and learn more about local attractions and tours. The City of Marco Island is located on the island of the same name at the southern tip of Florida's west coast. Together with Naples and the Everglades National Park, it makes up what is known as the Paradise Coast.

The "Paradise" beaches of Tigertail and South Marco are pretty much packed to the rafters during the summer holidays. The period from January through April is the peak season. The beach resorts dotting this four mile stretch of sandy beaches will be sold out well ahead of time for these busy months, and the room rates will likewise be higher due to high occupancy.

Smart travelers often plan ahead a long time to avoid the crowds by skipping summer and spring break. The sun, sand and waters are just as bright, warm and inviting all year round, so it's actually a pretty good deal. Hotel stays and other lodgings are cheaper and easily available, and there are no tourist hordes swarming the beaches.

The offshore possibilities for recreation are endless, although snorkeling, fishing and dolphin watching are more popular than the rest. Outdoor enthusiasts will want to check out Collier Seminole State Park, where people can camp out, explore nature trails and do some fishing and canoeing. Of course, none of this holds a candle to the thrill of an Everglades airboat tour and an expedition to Totch Island.

Tourists seeking more thrills can get a jet-ski or powerboat for rent and let it rip through the waters. Many companies in the area can also arrange for visitors to try their hand at parasailing and windsurfing. Another popular activity is a shelling tour, where people are shown where to find and dig up exquisite sea shells on many different sandy beaches in the area.

The golf courses in Southwest Florida are famed enough to be an attraction in their own right. An avid golfer taking a holiday here is unlikely to miss the opportunity to hit the links at the Island Golf Club. Shopaholics will likewise feel right at home in Marco Walk among all the shops, boutiques and restaurants. There are plenty of places like the Mackle Community Park for families to spend the afternoon enjoying a picnic or just relaxing in the outdoors.

All said and done, a Marco Island vacation is different from most other beach holiday destinations, including those within Florida. Visitors will find it has a lot more than just the usual pristine white sand beaches, ocean breeze and spectacular sunsets that can be found all along the Gulf Coast. It's the heady mix of urban pleasures and tourist facilities combined with the vast and unspoiled natural beauty of the Everglades that makes this place so special.
