What To Use As Egg Seasoning

By Cornelia Reyes

To season food is to enhance its flavor by adding salt, herbs and spices. Seasonings may also be combined to complement one another. Egg seasoning should not overpower the taste of the eggs but add to the flavor. The timing of when seasonings are added to the eggs can affect the taste too. Some are best added to the mixture as it is being cooked while others work better when added after cooking.

Eggs absorb flavors well and so any spices need to be added carefully as they are usually quite strong. This includes peppers like cayenne, ground pepper, peppercorns and mixed peppers. Fresh peppers go very well with eggs and also help to give a good spicy taste. These fresh peppers are usually diced so the taste can be spread evenly but they may also be cut into small chunks to add texture. Curry is another spice that can be added for an Indian flavor.

Herbs are an excellent way to season eggs. A cheese souffle is enhanced with basil and parsley. For an egg salad, chives and green chili are a great combination. Many different herbs may be added to omelets, scrambled eggs and other egg mixtures like oregano, thyme, chervil, chives and basil. Herbs infused in oils may also be used for seasonings.

Onions, garlic, green onions and chives are often referred to as condiments rather than seasonings. Whatever they are called these ingredients all work wonderfully with eggs. Mustard and Worcestershire sauce are two hot condiments that many people use with their eggs.

Blends of different seasonings are available at most stores. Here all the work is done for you by experts. It is great to experiment yourself but buying one of these blends takes away the guesswork and offers tried and tested combinations, including some you may not have thought suitable for eggs. Trying some of these bought combinations such as those to add a Mexican or Italian flair may just stimulate new ideas for dishes other than the old favorites that may become boring after a while.

Sweet seasonings are not used with eggs as much as savory and spicy ones. Cinnamon is one of the spices that may be used for some sweetness. Sun-dried tomatoes are one of the best natural ways to introduce a hint of sweetness.

For gourmet flair, ingredients like capers, sun-dried tomatoes or chopped olives make a difference. Use sun-dried tomatoes tossed with hard boiled or baked eggs or in omelets and scrambled eggs. With a few pieces of fresh tomato for moisture and a garnish of green onion, you have an excellent combination with a gourmet twist.

Eggs are quick and easy to prepare and relatively inexpensive. They are a valuable source of protein for your family and with the right egg seasoning can be very tasty. Knowing the right combinations of herbs and spices helps and making sure that you have some seasonings available at all times means that you never have to worry about providing a tasty, nutritious meal.
