Learning About Proper Dining Etiquette

By Teri Farley

Commendable dinning rules are set conventions that guide behavior in social and professional circles. The objective behind these rules is to ensure that everybody has peace of mind. People allege their royalty to these rules, because by so doing, their confidence that they are acting accordingly is assured. Though failures to submit to these rules attract no reprimand, you lose respect from peers. This brings in the essence of knowing the proper dining etiquette.

While at the dinner table, it is prudent to observe some of the rules. Switching off your phone is also necessary. If that is not possible, it should be in the vibrating mode. Making calls and receiving calls at the eating room is prohibited, as well as writing short messages over the phone. If you must make a call, it is wise to leave the dining room to the restrooms.

If your partners are late to come to the dinner table, do not take the advantage of doing the appetizers. It is prudent you wait for them to arrive and get themselves comfortable and have your meal together. Smiling as you say hi to your co-dinners at the dinner table is advisable.

When everybody is set, the first step to follow is place the napkin on your lap. With some fanfare unfold it, the half way fold it to place it on your lap. When in the dining place, smoking is illegal. Relax and assume a good posture. The hand should be placed on the edges of the table or on the laps when not eating. You should manage your elbows as it is a bad gesture to place them on the table.

At times you may sneeze. In case that happens, grab a tissue on your way out of the room. Never blow your nose near the eating place especially on the napkin. Wash your hand for purposes of good hygiene as you come back to the dining room. As you cough cover your mouth with your napkin to stop any chance of spreading germs. You may excuse yourself to the washrooms, and as you return to the table have your hands cleaned.

Ladies should not place their purses on dining tables. If they are small enough, place them on your lap, and if they are large, place them on the floor under your chair. Do not place them on the isle where they can accidentally trip someone. Combing your hair at the table is unacceptable thing. These take effect on putting on lipsticks or make up too. All that should be done in the rest rooms.

The hostess or the host should be the first one to take the folk. It is less presentable to do that before unless you are permitted to do that. Never chew gum at the table, excuse yourself out and remove the gum.

At a meal do not pull the chair for the lady, which is done on social occasions. When eating is done, leave the plates there. The rest of the job is done by the service personnel. These are important procedures that will help people apply the proper dining etiquette.
