Here Is Information About Horse Fence

By Jennifer Parker

Horses are herbivorous animals, which means that they feed on grasses, leaves, and other forms of vegetation. As such, when being raised on a farm, it is important to keep them confined in one place. However, given their big and powerful nature, confining horses is something that is easier said than done. A weak horse fence can be easily kicked or trampled by these animals.

Naturally, horses posses an instinct of jumping. This instinct has its advantages, but when it comes to horse fences, it is totally a downside because it predisposes horses to fence injuries. Thus, construction of fences should be done in a way that the animals are not tempted to jump so that they get injured. This can be ensured by keeping posts and horizontal beams close together. The entire structure should also be very strong.

When it comes to making fencing for horses, there are very many decisions that need to be made. It is possible to comprise ones in a while to reach a specific goal. However, not matter how many decisions and compromises need to be made, there are certain aspects that cannot be changed or negotiated. For instance, the type of fencing erected cannot be negotiated. There are certain materials that are unsafe for horses and cannot be used under whatever circumstance. Such materials include barded wires and large, square meshes.

Barbed wires easily entrap horses as they try to jump over or run through fences. This is why they are not acceptable for use on this job. The spikes on the barbed wire can cause a lot of injury to the animal to a point of causing death or career-ending damage. If one settles for square mesh, the holes of the mesh should be less than 3 square inches. Squares that are too large usually have the hooves of the horses trapped and may cause injury.

When one is thinking about erecting a fence for their horse or horses, there are several factors that they must think about. These factors include budget, maintenance costs and requirements, aesthetics, number and size of horses, and the terrain. The ideal height for all fences meant for horses is between 4.5 and 5 feet. This height is high enough to keep the animals confined without any incidences of attempted escape.

The bottom part of the fence should also be constructed properly. A height of 6 feet to 8 feet above the ground must be observed when fencing. Fowls are safely kept within the confinement when this ideal height is observed. Horses also try grazing outside the confinement by sticking their heads under the fence. This height ensures they cannot do that.

Previously, the most commonly used material for these fences was wood. Such wood must be properly treated before being used to ensure durability. There are several different wood treatment methods that can be used. Posts should also be driven to a reasonable depth into the ground to ensure strength.

Wood is becoming less preferred as newer materials are invented using modern technology. PVC is one of the materials that are becoming more commonly used in making horse fences. This material presents more durability against various weather conditions. Maintenance is also cheap and easy.
