Texas BBQ For Regional Dining

By Essie Osborn

The big state of Texas has some truly unique and satisfying foods to offer both residents and tourists. The Texas BBQ restaurants are some of the favorite stops for almost everyone with the satisfying and mouth-watering menu items they have for sale. These foods are not available in most other states and if they are, they do not have the same great texture and taste. Each region of this large state has their own specialties but the basics are pretty much the same.

These south central establishments offer such meats as pork loin, brisket, turkey legs, pork ribs, beef ribs, sausage and chicken. Slow-cooked and sometimes smoked over various types of wood such as mesquite, the results are so tender, you can cut it with a fork. Many offer the selections by the pound making personal selections even more flexible and allowing for left-overs to take home and enjoy later.

Many food outlets have their own special brand of barbecue sauce. They may bottle it with their own distinct label and sell it to customers as they pay for their food. It is also served exclusively at that particular location.

The lists of side dishes available is also long. They include such tempting items as coleslaw, corn on the cob, potato salad, creamed corn, whole dill pickles, and baked beans. They can be purchased in a variety of sizes and servings including pints, quarts and single servings for both take out and dining in. Condiments and other items include white bread, ketchup, various hot sauces, mustard, pickle slices and onions.

Choices of cold beverages can include bottled and canned sodas, lemonade, sweet iced tea, long necks and a variety of canned beer. They are often displayed in ice-filled galvanized containers for easy access. Desserts may include fruit pies, cobblers, brownies or iced cream for adults and children alike.

Restaurants that offer this casual fare can be an indoor establishment with rustic tables and booths or just a stand with a patio and outdoor seating. Don't expect real flatware and dishes. Paper plates, plastic cups, plastic forks, knives and spoons are the norm as well as the requisite roll of paper towels in the middle of the tables to wipe sticky hands with. Most of these businesses also have extensive takeout services for easy, at home meals. More well-known venues will even offer catering services to their customers for a very reasonable fee.

There are also many restaurant chains based on this concept. Some of them grew from tiny, local businesses into million dollar franchises. Many hole-in-the-wall sites are very popular in the areas they are located and customers will flock to the restaurant to enjoy their special fare. While traveling, ask towns people for their suggestions as to the best location to visit.

If you are seeking foods that are unique to Texas and taste good, look no further than one of these food outlets. It will not be a disappointing experience and absolutely no one will go home with an empty stomach. Take home enough meat for later in the day or the next day - these items are wonderful leftovers to enjoy as sandwiches or between-meals snacks.
