Unique Dessert Ideas Include Champagne Truffles

By Jaclyn Hurley

Desserts are often seen as an indulgence. Even so, most people have a specific treat conjured up in their mind when they think of special occasions. For example, chocolate cakes with rich frosting are often associated with birthdays. White, fluffy cupcakes are expected at weddings. Valentine's Day is usually associated with a box of fancy chocolates. But sometimes an event needs to be particularly nice, like an anniversary, and that is when champagne truffles should be considered.

Although the name might lead one to believe this decadent dessert is based on a mushroom, don't worry. While there are mushrooms that are similarly named, that is where the resemblance stops. In fact, this confectioner's delight was initially made popular by Teuscher. The signature touch was the addition of a rich, creme Dom Perignon center surrounded by a dark chocolate ganache. It was then rolled in a light coating of confectioner's sugar.

Because of its rich and delicate flavors, these desserts have been associated with special occasions warranting first class quality. As expected, however, the price associated with these original creations can be a bit stifling for those with limited cash flow. Thankfully, with the plethora of excellent recipes available to the everyday person, there is no need to dip into personal savings.

As with most things nowadays, finding fantastic recipes are as easy as a web search. When searching for a quality recipe, type the term in quotation marks to ensure that everything that comes up is relevant to the search. Once the browser returns the options, there are literally hundreds of sites that can be chosen from. Each location may have multiple options to review. Then it comes down to selecting the best match.

Even though dessert is often forgone due to calories and weight watching, special times often warrant great desserts. While the traditional recipe is always delicious, there are creative twists to make them even better. One such twist is to wrap the warm dark chocolate ball with gold leafing which is edible. The sheets of leafing are so thin that they must be brushed on with a dry makeup brush. But once completed, the results are stunning.

Once feeling confident, changing the type of chocolate used in the truffles can make it taste entirely different. Substituting a rich, milk chocolate instead of the traditional dark ganache, enhances the beautiful color to that of caramel. Its golden sweet taste is subtle, but still has the traditional texture and base flavor of the original.

For a truly unique experience, a wonderful twist is to make the dessert a classic pink. Instead of using dark or milk, white chocolate is used as the base. After the center is dried, several teaspoons of red colored gelatin is added to the white exterior. The delicate pink color is perfect for that girly-girl.

When looking for a way to celebrate something special in your life, think outside of the box. Boxed candy holds nothing compared to a handmade dessert. Show that awesome someone just how much you care in a new and inventive manner. It will be an experience they will never forget.
