Troops Can Now Get Kosher MRE Rations

By Myrtle Cash

Once upon a time meals ready to eat were aimed solely at the military. The military is a huge organisation, and as you might expect attracts recruits from all faiths. With certain faiths come certain dietary requirements. This is certainly true of the Jewish faith, and so kosher mre rations came to be. These are also available to the civilian population and also for areas of disaster relief.

The military had several stipulations. These meals have to be easily carried, each person would often be carrying rations for three days. So therefore they couldn't be too heavy, a problem with the old fashioned canned rations. An added bonus is that prior to eating so heating or extra water is required.

Many service personnel would have you believe that ration packs sit on shelves before being sent out to the waiting troops. As there are less Jewish personnel their rations have a faster service. This means that their rations will be so much fresher when they arrive.

To enable these ready meals to be listed as being truly kosher, very tough guidelines have are in place. Everything has to be done as Jewish laws and traditions dictate. This includes the preparation, and wherever the preparation takes place, whatever utensils are used, and even the packaging at the end.

Many people think that this standard only affects the meat. That is only part of the process. Any meat has to have been kept in accordance with certain practices, and it then has to have been slaughtered in a specific way. The condition of the animal's lungs is extremely important, these should have no blemishes or defects.

Anything that is grain based, must be made with old grain. The Jewish faith declares that there are five classic grains of olden Israel. These are Barley, Wheat, Rye, Oats and Spelt. To be classed as old they must have been planted and have taken root before Passover. Modern grains like Rice and Corn are not affected by this stipulation.

As with other meals ready to eat there are often soups. Once again the process has to be strictly followed to ensure that these soups are parve. This certifies that no dairy products or meats are contained. It also guarantees that the contents have not come into contact with either. Which is also something that vegetarians and vegans are also keen to observe.

Even leafy green vegetables get thoroughly checked. Dairy produce has some of the strictest guidelines. Every step of the way has to be under rabbinical guidance. This includes from the initial milking, right up until the final packaging.

Hopefully this has given people an insight into kosher mre rations. As previously mentioned they are not solely used by the military. Many do find their way into civilian hands, as they are a fully balanced diet within the Jewish faith's laws and teachings. They are also used to provide aid in areas of disaster control and relief.
