Jamaican Fruit Cake Is The Perfect End To An Island Style Meal

By Michael Wagner

The tastes of the Caribbean are like no other, as recipes range from fruity to spicy or tangy. Some menu items call for an array of flavors on one plate that makes the taste buds dance with delight. While most people have their favorite island inspired entrees, side dishes, and even drinks, dessert is often overlooked. The Jamaican fruit cake is many layers of flavor that can be served every day of the year.

While spicy food lovers may either be too full or overwhelmed by the heat in their dishes, they may think that there is no room for any kind of dessert. Others may believe that sweets may get lost in the lingering flavor profile because no one wants to consume empty calories. However, a good fruitcake will hold its own against many spicy dishes.

Making this cake at home is fairly easy and it is also easy to control the alcohol content if needed. Some bakers use natural rum flavor when serving to mixed groups or young people. While some credit the rum for the moist texture, there are many substitutes that can be added instead.

More people are learning about dishes from the Caribbean and restaurants are beginning to add dishes with an island influence to their menus. It may be a safe bet that jerk chicken is one of the most popular dishes, followed by rice and peas. Side dishes like beef or vegetable patties and fried plantains can also work as entrees.

There are some recipes that will call for molasses to add flavor and add color. However, many use alcohol, usually brandy or rum, for added moisture and taste. The liquids can make the difference when it comes to taste and potency. This should also be figured out before determining who will be eating this dessert.

When it comes to the alcohol, it depends on their personal preference and how much they are willing to handle. Few brave bakers will add a flavored rum, like vanilla, for a contrast of flavors. However, those who enjoy getting a little tipsy may go for 151 proof vodka. For full potency, a cooled cake will soak in a few cups overnight instead of cooking away the alcohol.

Otherwise, there are some who not only marinate the fruit in rum before baking but will add ample amounts of dark rum to the batter. While very decadent, it can cause anyone to become very lethargic shortly afterward. While some Americanized recipes may call for a rum flavored white icing, this can be enjoyed warm by itself or with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream or gelato.

The flavors make it an exciting gift to give someone over the holidays and the texture is dense enough to enjoy a small serving. This is an ideal dessert to serve at social gatherings that have an island theme or just something different to have at home. Anyone who loves spicy foods will not ignore this tasty treat.
