There are many benefits to having ample kitchen space but some people are often overwhelmed by the possibilities and may not use it to its full potential. A worse scenario is those who become overly comfortable with the additional space and do not maintain it for functionality. As there are many types when it comes to cooking, there are also people with varied housekeeping habits. The best way to make use of this space is to create a set of realistic walk in pantry organization ideas.

While it may be easy to place something on a shelf or closet space without thought, this can backfire on anyone who does not consider placement. It is easy for small objects to get lost on a vertical shelf when surrounded by much larger items. By placing the larger items near the back, where the label is still visible, is a good idea.

Once space has been cleared, or not, it helps to have designated shelves. For instance, one can be reserved for canned entrees or side dishes like premade chili or ravioli. Another shelf may be used to hold only condiments or seasonings. If seasoning containers are small, it may help to add a vertical length rack to the wall or inside a door.

Before placing items at random, organize each category and look at each item before stashing. Large items should be placed toward the back and smaller containers near the front. Also, if there is space above the smaller items, a portable shelving unit can be used to create more space.

For those who like to buy bulk items, these should be kept in the coolest part of the pantry and possibly insulated. Sealable containers are ideal for storing loose bulk items like beans, grains, and nuts. The date or purchase should also be clearly labeled so there are no surprises before cooking or consumption.

If small children or those who are differently abled persons are present in the home, there should be a special shelf for them to access safely. This should be within their natural range of motion and for good measure, contents should be kept inside containers that do not break easily. A foldable step stool may be kept nearby if the parent believes their child or another person can use it at some point.

For households that use the pantry often, it will help to keep a nearby inventory list. Any member can write down items that are running low. This will help family members keep track of those things that need replacing. Another way to keep things running smoothly is to have sticky labels and a pen nearby. This can be used to write down purchase dates or indicate what something is to be used for so there are no misunderstandings amongst other people.

Maintenance is not always easy but it does help to have a routine that everyone can follow. Some people think going through everything three or four times a year is ideal but it depends on the structure of the household. This is the best way to ensure that all food is fresh and that no one is wasting money on items that may have once been lost or simply forgotten.
