What You Need To Know About Halal MRE

By Andrea Davidson

A lot of people have not heard of a Halal MRE. Whereas they may know that many other ready meals exist, they may not have known about these. They have been designed to comply with the rigorous standards required from Muslims and although the number of Muslims in the army is a fairly small percentage, they are a very important product.

The army is one of the largest customers. They order the product because it's very easy to transport, meaning that troops can carry them as part of their rations. Another thing the army likes is the fact that they can be eaten hot or cold. It makes them perfect for people that will not be near a kitchen but may need to eat.

The MRE has proved to be invaluable in many other situations. During natural disasters it's use as humanitarian aid has saved hundreds of thousands of lives. It's flexibility is such that even campers and hikers have been known to pack the food in their provisions because it is a lightweight product that is ideal in emergencies.

What people should remember is that just because a Muslim can eat this type of food it does not mean that people of other religious faiths can eat it too. Jews, for instance, have special requirements for grains like rye, barley and wheat, especially during the Passover. Also, they have different culinary standards to Muslims.

The ready to eat meal can actually be eaten hot. And it can even be heated up without the use of a stove or any type of electrical equipment. What soldiers, hiker and campers have found is that if you leave the packet out in the sun for half an hour the food gets sufficiently warm to be considered a hot meal. Alternatively, you can placed the foil packet on a running vehicle engine for ten minutes and the food will be ready to consume.

What people need to remember is that kosher food and halal food, whilst similar in some regards, are quite different in others. Therefore, it would not be a good idea to give a Muslim a kosher MRE or give a Jew an MRE meant for a Muslim. They prepare food to different standards and eat different types. For instance, some Jewish food is made with alcohol, something that is strictly forbidden in the Islamic faith.

The thing people find most interesting about MRE food is that everything you need is in the box and ready to consume. It has been designed to give troops enough nutrition and calories to last them through the day. Most boxes contain several courses, such as a main meal, dessert, snack, drink and a side dish. Muslims have added peace of mind in knowing that the food has been produced specifically to cater to their needs.

A Halal MRE, while mainly for Muslims, can be eaten by many other people. Its importance in the army cannot be underestimated. It is easy to transport and versatile enough for soldiers to eat it hot of cold when away from the main base.
