By Margaret Scott

The beans, otherwise known as Moong beans or green grams are basically species of plants belonging to the leguminous family. They are majorly cultivated in countries like India, China, as well as Southern Asia, among other places. The plants are used as ingredients in savory as well as sweet dishes. Mung beans are also prevalently used in a variety of cuisines around Asia.

The said legumes are majorly popular because of the immeasurable nutritional densities they possess. Though they have not been extensively cultivated in the United States, they have been grown way back in 1830s, though their popularity has risen after two decades or so. Today, around seventy five percent of Moong in US is imported from China cum India. Asia is another notable exporter of Moong.

While Moong may be totally unheard of or new to majority of people in United States of America, the crops have been a radical part of ancient cultural Ayurveda diets for a myriad years. Nowadays, Moong is beginning to come out in many protein powders as well as in canned soups, in many restaurants. This is because people have started discovering their insurmountable nutritional value. Firstly, their nutritional content includes nutrients such as copper, zinc, Vitamin B, magnesium, manganese, potassium, and amino acids, alongside others.

Examples of the nutrients that are present in the foods under discussion include magnesium, copper, some forms of Vitamin B, zinc, manganese, just to mention but a few. They have also been identified as filling foods, owing to their considerable protein amounts. Some scientists also claim that Moong contains resistant starches alongside dietary fiber. The impressive nutrient volumes that are in Moong are enough proof that they are very handy and indispensable, as far as heath is concerned. They help in the fight against diseases, especially chronic ones, age-based diseases, cancers, heart malfunction, some types of diabetes, obesity, etc.

Green grams, since they have substantial amounts of Folate which is otherwise referred to as Vitamin B9, play great roles in synthesis of DNA, growth and replacement of tissues and body cells. They also contribute in hormonal balancing, cognitive functioning and also reproduction. In fact, pregnant mothers stand advised to consume high amounts of foliate since it greatly aids in preventing misconceptions, early births, terminations, or neural tube disorders.

The said crops also help in lowering high blood pressures. Research shows that they possess anti-hypertensive effects, allegedly due to protein levels in fragments called peptides. They greatly aid in decreasing constricting of various blood vessels and body tissues which raise levels of blood pressure.

The high amino acid levels present in Moong are presumed to be the main reason why their antioxidants possess great potentials of fighting cancer developments. Clinical studies further reveal that they show anti-tumor activities, and thus are able to defend DNA damages as well as risky cell mutations.

It is also worth noting that green grams do not pose any side effects after eating, unlike other examples of legumes. There are no cases of bloating or even any constipation. Actually, green grams help in the process of detoxification, in various cases.
