Food & Nutrition: A Look Assisted Living In San Diego County

By Rue Nichols

Some people mistakenly believe that your appetite sharply diminishes and your sense of taste declines as you age, but this is really just a myth. Good food is something you should be enjoying all of your life, and the culinary options at assisted living facilities can be one of the highlights of living there.

There's nothing wrong with eating alone once in a while, but often seniors who live independently don't have much chance to enjoy meals with friends or family. For those who live in assisted living in San Diego, not only are you always guaranteed a meal with friends, you never have to clean up, shop for groceries or prep for meals. At most facilities, three meals each day and snacks are simply part of the monthly costs.

This doesn't mean that you can't eat alone now and then, of course, and most communities for assisted living in Escondido or San Diego include a kitchenette space. This probably will include a small refrigerator and perhaps a coffee pot, a toaster or a microwave as well as some cupboards for storing snacks.

If you are searching for assisted living in San Diego or assisted living in Escondido, not only should you ask plenty of questions and take a good long tour of the facility, you should eat a meal or two at the facility. Come for at least one dinner and possibly a breakfast or a lunch, if possible. Take a look at the menus and see if it looks like it will accommodate your tastes as much as possible.

When you visit various facilities, you probably will note that larger communities tend to have more diverse menu selections. With so many residents to please, they will offer multiple entrees, several salads and a soup or two with each meal as well as a selection of side dishes and desserts. At a smaller board and care home, the menu might not be nearly as diverse, but it is important to know that with just five or six residents, it's easier to find options that suit the tastes of this smaller group.

One note for those with a loved one in a home for assisted living in San Diego: Be sure to come and eat breakfast, lunch or dinner with your loved one once in a while. Beyond just visiting and hanging out in their apartment, mealtimes give you the opportunity to get to know other residents as well as some of the staff members. Be sure to also take your loved one out to dinner sometimes, too. Everyone enjoys a fancy meal at a favorite bistro or perhaps a big family dinner, so don't forget to plan those outings.
