Food from the southern part of the country are traditionally cooked fried with chicken as the most common meat. These were developed from the meals made by Black Americans centuries ago when slave trade was still legal. Because slaves were not allowed to learn reading and writing, the recipes were orally passed down until emancipation.

People usually the meals as unhealthy and greasy though this has been changing recently with new techniques in cooking being adapted. Use less oil or some healthier alternatives such as canola, peanut or olive oil rather than hydrogenated fats to lighten up your food. Add flavor by mixing cayenne pepper and garlic powder to the breading and not fat.

Vegetables and fruits are abundant in the southern area because of their climate having hot summer and milder winters which results to a longer season for growing. They are abundant the whole year which makes their meal filled with them. Using more of them will make their dishes more healthful specially when prepared properly.

For creating the instant stew, pair tomatoes with okra, and for sweet potatoes, roasting them will their natural sweetness out and its flavor is enhanced by cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg. Saute greens with olive oil and garlic or cook them in vegetables or in chicken broth slowly for an additional element of savor. Red pepper flakes and hot peppers when added gives more taste.

Fruit as a dessert is always a great choice though they do not eat them directly but are made into pies and cobblers with peaches and blackberries being popular choices. Use vegetable oil when making them and reduce sugar use by mixing flour and lemon juice instead. You could even grill them with honey, toasted silvered almonds and vanilla yogurt.

If not eating animal products is your preference then substituting meat with tofu, the most popular substitute, is possible. But other products as alternatives are there like tempeh or veggie burgers with more flavor when compared to tofu. Nondairy butter and milk are available for vegan meals and creamy recipes use the former for their needs. The milk is gotten from hemp, almond, soy, coconut and cashew that are alternative of dairy cream. When the recipe calls for butter then use coconut oil or nondairy butter instead.
