A Basic Primer On Halal MRE

By Carolyn Brooks

As the world becomes more influenced by the Islamic faith, we see more and more items or words unique to the Islamic world. Two of these words are the words halal and haram, which means allowed and forbidden respectively. Sometimes you will see halal MRE on the shelves or online, or even your battalion mates eating it. Now you are wondering what the difference is.

Halal food of any kind is basically food that is prepared in a prescribed fashion by Muslim clerics following strict procedures and guidelines. You cannot just put a label and sell it to any Muslim, as most people of the faith will know if it is really genuine or not. This is because some halal foods are required to show the source, the way it was prepared and how the whole thing was processed together.

The lack of pork and MSG is a general characteristic of this kind of food, and also the general lack of preservatives per se. It will not include blood or alcohol in its content and animal based gelatin I never used. Halal ingredients will always include the freshest of ingredients such as grains and cereals, fruits and vegetables, dairy products and select spices and herbs.

Many foods nowadays, including fast foods, and other favorite mainstream Western meals are being made into halal so that more people can enjoy them. And as more people are turning to the Islamic faith it has become a lucrative business. Many argue that to make such a move in turn makes this kind of food more expensive than others not prepared in this way.

Other items of commercial value are also jumping onto the same bandwagon, which includes clothing and cosmetics. Halal tourism is also gaining ground, in which hotels do not offer alcohol or pork products, have separate facilities for men and women and so on and so forth.

This trend has also affected the way the United States military operates, especially in the way that it prepares Meal Ready to Eat packs prepared in this method. Theoretically in the end, you will be getting to eat something that is healthier, but likewise something that also costs a bit more, due to increased time to prepare amongst other things.

The real difference according to users is that the MRE prepared the this way is much more healthier than the standard one. In general these preparations lack MSG, trans fats, asparteme, sucralose and other ingredients which are high in sugar. Consumption of this therefore will in theory make a soldier less fatigued and jumpy on the battlefield due to the lack of these prohibited ingredients.

Whether or not this type of product is for you will really depend on how much you want to try it or like it, but also how much you are willing to spend. Standard packs may cost anywhere from ten to thirty percent more expensive in terms of price when compared to the ordinary MRE.
